While Windows Scan is certainly a convenient tool, it lacks many of the features that users need in a scanner application. For example, scanning multiple pages into a single PDF is often necessary when scanning documents, but this is not possible with Windows Scan. Similarly, scanned photos are often of poor quality, and it is difficult to make adjustments to improve the image. Finally, film and slides cannot be scanned at all using Windows Scan, making it difficult to digitize old family photos. Overall, then, while Windows Scan has its uses, it falls short in terms of functionality compared to other scanner applications.

In the case of slide scanners, speed is measured by the number of pages your device can scan per minute (ppm). While top-tier models can quickly scan images at up to 7200 dpi, manual scanners can produce outputs depending on how fast you load your slides. Likewise, ppm is also influenced by factors like image resolution and paper size.
Merging practicality and easy-to-use features is the Kodak Slide N Scan, a portable scanner that weighs only 0.81 lbs. While it is easily one of the most lightweight slide scanners out there, it does not compromise efficiency, thanks to its intelligent design.
Magnasonic relives old memories at half the price (and half the size) of equally-competent models. With a solid build at 0.66 lbs., this slide scanner is the most lightweight device on our list. Its display screen is quite small at 2.4 inches, but the image quality is accurate, so if you want a compact slide scanner, the Magnasonic scanner is a great pick for you. You can also view your scanned image through its TV-out option, but there will be changes in the image quality of your previews dependent on your display size.
The Magnasonic scanner scans and converts Super 8, 110, 126KPK, 35mm films, and slides into 22 MP images that are then converted into a JPEG file. Additionally, it has a built-in storage of up to 128 MB, which basically means that you can save up to 100 images on this unit alone. It also has an SD card slot if you need to make room for more files.
Got rolls of old 35 mm films or slides? Zonoz FS-One is here to offer you a practical way to put your images back into the spotlight. Inarguably one of the cheapest slide scanners to date, the FS-One is a stand-alone device that allows you to make basic editing functions through its built-in software. Aside from making adjustments on scanning brightness and resolution, you can also mirror and flip your images for better image outputs.
No external software or computer is needed for this slide scanner. You can scan and convert your films and slides into 22 MP images in just a matter of seconds. Considering its price point, this is a pretty solid device that can get your slides digitized in no time.
True to its name, the ClearClick QuickConvert 2.0 is a high-speed slide scanner that converts your physical copies into digital images in just 2-3 seconds. Compatible with a range of slides and films including 46 photos, 135/35 mm slides, and 126, 110, and 135/35 mm negatives, this device allows better flexibility in terms of scanning format types.
Despite all these amazing features, one thing that pulls this device down is its image resolution. Unlike other models that can produce high-quality images, the QuickConvert slide scanner only scans images at 14 MP, which is a lot lower than other models on our list.
Moreso, this all-in-one film scanner allows you to convert 35 mm, Super 8, 110, and 126 films, along with 35 mm, 110, and 126 slides into JPEG files in just 1-2 seconds. Its intuitive 4.3-inch display is also more sizeable when compared to other models at its price point.
Other than its crisp display, you can also get a preview of your files by connecting your slide scanner to a TV via an HDMI cable. Here, you can edit image features such as color, brightness, and resolution and even view your collections on a slideshow.
The best part: just like most of our picks of the best slide scanners, the Wolverine Titan can work without any additional software or a computer. It quickly produces great outputs, particularly if you need digital images for social media use.
Loaded with a multitude of high-end features, the Plustek OpticFilm 8200i Ai is, without a doubt, the best slide scanner on our list. Its solid build and character do not end at the surface as it picks up many of the phenomenal internal features of its famous sibling, the 8100. But this time, Plustek made sure that the 8200i Ai raised the bar higher by adding color calibration software and a scratch and dust removal function via a built-in infrared channel.

I'm at 1200 of maybe 9000 to digitize-100 at a time. Any words of wisdom from anybody? Tom.ohaver 14/2/2009, 14:41 น. Mwoodyf, Can you tell us what driver you're using. I've been working with this scanner that I've gotten from Hammacher Schlemmer and it shows up as the OVT on device manager. I can't tell what model it is, and it appears that vupoint has an xp only, and an xp/vista, model.
Mine came with the scanner from Brookstone. Brookstone advised me about three weekas ago when they sent me another disc that it was the latest so I would have assumed it was Vista capable. I found a website several weeks ago that had two years worth of frustrated comments from OVT users. It appears that both companies use the same OVT driver and many users have the same problems we have had. The program that came with it is an ArcSoft with PhotoImpression 6 program. That's the one that would not work on Vista even thought the literature says it should. After I did maybe 700 slides to begin with, I upgraded from Picasa2 to Picasa3 last week and got the freeze-up after only a few slides.
I'm probably not going to spend several thousand dollars on a scanner, but she said that's what it will take to get good images from my slides. I have some pretty good slides of my own, mostly outdoors. I've always been into textures, shadows in the trees and clouds contrast, and the OVT just doesn't get that off the slide (yet).
Thanks rolfe mwoodyf 19/2/2009, 18:55 น. I have been experimenting with Veho Slide scanner. The drivers which came with software are next to useless (i'm currently using XP). As as been stated above scan time are high and give poor image quality. I found the best results using XP default twain drivers.
But that is only part of the solution of washed-out downloads. Typically each slide gets progressively lighter when in the unit for digitizing. Some of them start light and do get darker. I have not been able to establish a pattern of why some get darker and some get lighter-until now. The area of the scanner view that captures the digitized snap shot gets completely white or clear after the first snap shot of the three in a tray. The next two to twelve (I have four trays with three slides per tray) then start with the background completely clear and digitized picture somewhat washed out. I have discoverd if I remove the tray and let the area get dark again, and replace the tray to the next slide, I can capture a decent digitized picture, one after the other.
This new procedure will triple the time it takes to get the digitzed slide. I realize this process is something that we and our family will enjoy for a long time. It may be worth it. But with many thousands more to go, it'll really become a project. By the way, uninstall and reinstall of the OVT driver makes no difference. Hopefully some of you will check on this post and pick this up.
That's when I move the tray to capture the second slide at the end of the tray. I have found that it goes rather quickly and it also gives me a chance to do some of them over again to capture the best picture. I've redone over 450 slides that way now and the results are pretty amazing. Even some of the dark slides come out very nice. It appears that the equipment is reasonbaly good, It's just that the manufacturer and sellers of the products do not appear to have much of a clue on how to instruct customers to use the equipment for best results. Woody A s K 11/3/2009, 15:01 น. At there are USB driver downloads available for the manufacturers different CCD sensors.
Not particularly for this slide / negative scanner. I have no idea if it can actually damage the CCD sensor. It gives the opportunity to change the major settings. Run the software simultaneously with the ovt scanner software. Start the OVT scanner the usual way first. If the video scanner is started first than it will scan and saver picture by picture not allowing the ovt scanner to start. It might even work better like that and the previews are full screen.
All in all, the OVT Slide Scanner I have now meets my needs. Ojchome 3/8/2009, 20:35 น. Hi all I have a Brookstone scanner and I also have the same problem of over exposure. I have noticed that indoor flash pics are worse then outdoor ones, as the falsh is more concentrated in the middle of the shot. I have a Canon flatbed scanner that does slides and film, it came with Photoshop Elements software that supports the OVT scanner also. So what I do is load 3 slides in the tray scan them using the OVT scanner, if they look good I save them, if not I use the Canon scanner and clean them all up using Photoshop. 2ff7e9595c
